Barangay Ginebra returned to the win column in the 2026 PBA Governors’ Cup with a gritty defensive performance, defeating the Meralco Bolts, 84-75, on Friday night at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. Leading the charge was RJ Abarrientos, who delivered his finest outing of the conference and earned Player of the Game honors after pouring in a game-high 27 points.
With several key players unavailable, the Gin Kings relied on resilience, disciplined defense, and timely shot-making to secure an important victory that improved their record to 2-2 in the tournament. It wasn’t the prettiest offensive display, but it was exactly the kind of hard-earned win Barangay Ginebra needed after dropping their previous contest.
From the opening tip, Ginebra established the tone defensively. The Gin Kings forced Meralco into difficult shots while controlling the tempo on both ends of the floor. Although both teams struggled offensively early, Ginebra gradually created separation thanks to Abarrientos’ aggressive scoring and the inside presence of import Riley Grigsby.
Abarrientos looked comfortable from the outset, attacking off the dribble and confidently knocking down perimeter shots. Grigsby complemented Abarrientos brilliantly, finishing with 25 points, nine rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and a steal. His ability to finish inside and protect the rim gave Ginebra the balanced attack it needed while several regular contributors remained sidelined.
Meralco refused to fold after halftime.
Import Antonio Hester powered the Bolts with 24 points and 18 rebounds, while veteran Chris Banchero added 15 points despite the team missing several rotation players, including CJ Cansino, Jason Brickman, Bong Quinto, and Raymond Almazan due to injuries and illness. The undermanned Bolts fought hard and trimmed the deficit multiple times in the second half.
The fourth quarter saw Meralco outscore Ginebra 25-19, briefly threatening to make the game interesting. However, every time the Bolts gained momentum, the Gin Kings answered with timely baskets and crucial defensive stops.
Abarrientos once again delivered when his team needed him most.
Whether it was knocking down a clutch jumper, attacking the basket, or calmly orchestrating the offense, the young guard consistently halted Meralco’s comeback attempts. He finished with 27 points, three rebounds, three assists, and one steal, his highest scoring output of the Governors’ Cup so far and easily his most complete performance of the conference.
While Abarrientos stole the spotlight offensively, Barangay Ginebra’s defense ultimately decided the outcome.
The Gin Kings held Meralco to just 33.7 percent shooting from the field, frustrating the Bolts throughout the evening with physical defense, active rotations, and relentless effort. Their commitment on the defensive end compensated for occasional offensive struggles and ensured they maintained control until the final buzzer.
After the game, head coach Tim Cone praised his team’s determination despite acknowledging the contest wasn’t aesthetically pleasing.
“It was a real grind-it-out game. Really proud of our guys for sticking their nose into it and really grinding this thing out. It wasn’t a pretty game by any means. We know we’re not playing pretty basketball yet, but hopefully we’ll get there as we progress.”

Cone’s comments reflected the identity Ginebra displayed throughout the night. Rather than relying on highlight plays or explosive offense, the Gin Kings embraced a physical, defensive-minded approach that eventually wore down their rivals.
