The Blackwater Bossing opened the second round of the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup on a winning note, overcoming a 15-point deficit to defeat the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters, 106-100, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Leading the comeback was Player of the Game Sedrick Barefield, who erupted for 26 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, as Blackwater outscored Phoenix, 29-14, in the final period to snap its three-game losing streak.
The victory gave the Bossing renewed momentum as they look to climb the standings during the crucial second half of the elimination round.
Blackwater Storms Back
Phoenix looked poised to secure another victory after building a comfortable 15-point lead behind the hot shooting of import BJ Johnson. The Fuel Masters entered the fourth quarter with an 86-77 advantage, putting Blackwater on the brink of another defeat.
Instead of folding, the Bossing tightened their defense and found their rhythm offensively.
Barefield spearheaded the rally with fearless drives and timely jumpers, while import Kentrell Barkley controlled the paint and the supporting cast delivered key contributions on both ends of the floor.
An 11-0 run midway through the final quarter completely shifted the momentum, allowing Blackwater to seize control before holding off Phoenix in the closing minutes.
Sedrick Barefield Takes Charge
When Blackwater needed a leader, Barefield answered the call.
The explosive guard scored 11 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter, making clutch baskets that erased Phoenix’s lead and energized the Bossing.
His ability to create offense under pressure proved to be the difference as Blackwater completed one of its biggest comeback victories of the conference.
Coach Patrick Aquino praised Barefield for embracing the leadership role during the decisive stretch.
“I love what Sed has been doing, he’s being the leader of the team, he took over,” Aquino said, referring to Barefield’s dominant fourth-quarter performance.
Barefield, however, chose to credit the entire team instead of focusing on his individual effort.
“You know what kind of team you are when we’re getting stops, taking pride in our defense and just executing offensively,” Barefield said.
“Our coaches put a great gameplan together and when we execute it and we did what they wanted us to do and what they’ve been preaching to us, things are good for us. I think that’s what contributed to the comeback.”
Coach Patrick Aquino Praises the Entire Team
Following the emotional victory, Coach Patrick Aquino expressed his relief after seeing his squad bounce back from a difficult stretch.
“Just happy, very happy that we had this win. This is a good start for the second round. Hopefully, we could push more and get some more wins,” said an obviously relieved Aquino.
The Blackwater mentor also made sure to recognize the players who stepped up off the bench and helped spark the turnaround.
“I thank the guys, of course, they never stopped playing. Credit to the bench players because I had to put in Jed Mendoza, Troy Mallillin, Jack Dumont-Cruz, everybody. Everybody helped out. We contained them, we played good defense,” Aquino added.
The energy provided by the second unit allowed Blackwater to increase its defensive intensity, frustrating Phoenix throughout the fourth quarter and creating the opportunities that fueled the comeback.

Barkley Delivers Another Double-Double
While Barefield stole the spotlight late, import Kentrell Barkley quietly put together another outstanding performance.
Barkley finished with 34 points and 16 rebounds, dominating inside the paint and giving Blackwater a consistent scoring option throughout the game.
Meanwhile, RK Ilagan came through with one of the game’s biggest plays after draining a difficult three-pointer as the shot clock expired, extending the Bossing’s momentum during their decisive fourth-quarter run.
Phoenix Unable to Hold On
Despite receiving a spectacular 45-point performance from import BJ Johnson, Phoenix struggled to generate offense in the final period.
Blackwater’s relentless defense forced difficult shots while limiting the Fuel Masters’ supporting cast during crunch time.
Ricci Rivero added 15 points, while Kai Ballungay chipped in 12, but Phoenix couldn’t stop the Bossing once the momentum shifted.
A Confidence-Boosting Victory
The win improved Blackwater to 3-3 in Group B while ending a three-game skid and providing the team with valuable momentum entering the second round of the Governors’ Cup.
More importantly, the Bossing rediscovered the defensive identity that carried them to victory.
With Sedrick Barefield embracing the leadership role and the entire roster contributing on both ends of the floor, Blackwater showed it has the resilience to compete against any team in the conference.
If the Bossing continue to defend with the same energy they displayed in the fourth quarter, this dramatic comeback over Phoenix could become the turning point of their campaign.
