ILAGAN CITY, Isabela — Veteran opposite hitter Michelle Gumabao delivered when it mattered most as the Creamline Cool Smashers opened their 2026 PVL On Tour campaign with a convincing 25-18, 25-23, 16-25, 25-19 victory over the Nxled Chameleons at the Capital Arena in Ilagan City, Isabela.
With hundreds of volleyball fans filling the venue for one of the tournament’s opening-day matches, Creamline displayed the poise and composure that have become synonymous with the franchise. Although Nxled managed to extend the match by taking the third set, the Cool Smashers relied on their veteran core to regain control and secure their first win of the tour.
Leading the charge was Gumabao, who produced 18 points through timely attacks and steady all-around play. Her performance highlighted not only her scoring ability but also her value as one of Creamline’s most experienced leaders.
Veteran Presence Fuels Creamline
Every successful team needs players who can rise to the occasion, and Gumabao once again proved why she remains one of the Premier Volleyball League’s most dependable veterans.
From the opening set until the final point, she consistently found ways to contribute offensively. Her attacks came from different areas of the court, making it difficult for Nxled’s blockers to anticipate where the next point would come from.
More importantly, Gumabao scored during critical stretches of the match. Whenever the Chameleons began building momentum, the veteran hitter answered with well-timed kills that allowed Creamline to maintain control.
While her 18-point total led the Cool Smashers, her leadership and communication on the floor were equally important. She constantly encouraged her teammates and helped organize the team’s offense during pressure situations.
Creamline Takes Early Command
The Cool Smashers entered the match with confidence and quickly established their rhythm.
Sharp passing allowed Creamline’s setters to distribute the ball efficiently, creating scoring opportunities for multiple attackers instead of relying on a single player. This balanced offense kept Nxled’s defense guessing throughout the opening set.
Creamline also excelled on the defensive end, limiting the Chameleons’ scoring chances through disciplined blocking and solid floor coverage.
The result was a comfortable 25-18 victory in the opening frame, giving the Cool Smashers an early advantage and setting the tone for the rest of the match.
Nxled Refuses to Go Away
Despite dropping the first set, Nxled showed determination in the second.
The Chameleons became more aggressive on both offense and defense, forcing Creamline into several extended rallies that energized the crowd inside the Capital Arena.
Nxled stayed within striking distance for most of the set, but every comeback attempt was answered by Creamline’s experienced players.
Gumabao once again stepped forward with several timely attacks, while the Cool Smashers remained composed during crucial exchanges.
Creamline eventually escaped with a narrow 25-23 victory to move ahead by two sets.
Although the Cool Smashers appeared to be in complete control, Nxled was far from finished.
Chameleons Stage a Strong Comeback
Facing the possibility of a straight-set defeat, the Chameleons came out with renewed energy in the third set.
Their improved serving disrupted Creamline’s offensive flow, while their blockers successfully challenged several attacks at the net. Nxled also capitalized on transition opportunities, allowing the team to build momentum midway through the set.
Creamline struggled to regain its rhythm as unforced errors began to pile up.
Sensing an opportunity, Nxled continued attacking with confidence and eventually claimed the third set, 25-16.
The convincing win injected new life into the match and reminded everyone that the Chameleons were capable of competing with one of the league’s strongest teams.

Champions Respond
One characteristic that has defined Creamline through the years is its ability to recover from adversity.
After dropping the third set, the Cool Smashers returned to the court with renewed focus.
Their defense became more organized, while the offense once again flowed through quick ball movement and smart decision-making.
Gumabao continued to lead by example, producing several key attacks that helped Creamline regain momentum.
Instead of allowing the match to extend into a deciding fifth set, the Cool Smashers gradually widened the gap in the fourth frame.
With every point, Creamline’s experience became more evident.
The team maintained its composure during crucial moments before finally sealing the fourth set, 25-19, and completing the victory.
More Than Just Scoring
Although Gumabao finished as Creamline’s leading scorer, her influence stretched beyond the statistics.
Her veteran presence helped stabilize the team whenever pressure mounted. Younger teammates looked to her for guidance during long rallies and difficult situations, while her calm approach allowed Creamline to stay composed after losing the third set.
Throughout her PVL career, Gumabao has earned a reputation for stepping up in important matches, and this contest was another example of that consistency.
Her ability to deliver both offensively and emotionally makes her one of the most valuable leaders on the roster.
Meneses Credits Veterans, Young Players
Following Creamline’s opening-day victory, head coach Sherwin Meneses lauded his team’s performance, especially with several younger players stepping up in the absence of some veteran regulars.
“Siyempre, masaya ako kasi nag-perform nang maganda ‘yung team namin. Kahit ‘yung mga seniors namin ‘di nakalaro, ‘yun naman ‘yung maka-experience sila ng ganitong laro. Magandang laro. So masaya,” Meneses said after the match.
The veteran tactician emphasized that the 2026 PVL On Tour serves as an ideal platform for the younger members of the roster to gain valuable playing experience while continuing to learn from Creamline’s established veterans.
Meneses added that he continues to remind his players to embrace the opportunity of competing at the professional level and enjoy the experience while representing the Cool Smashers. He also expressed confidence in the team’s younger players, saying they have shown a willingness to learn and adapt to the coaching staff’s system, which he hopes will lead to continued improvement throughout the tournament.
A Memorable Stop in Ilagan City
The PVL On Tour once again brought top-level volleyball to fans outside Metro Manila, and the enthusiastic crowd in Ilagan City made the occasion even more memorable.
Supporters packed the Capital Arena and created an exciting atmosphere from the opening serve until the final point. Every spectacular dig, block, and attack was met with loud cheers, giving both teams extra motivation to perform.
