MANILA, Philippines — Blackwater continued its dream start in the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup, grinding out an 89-81 victory over Magnolia on Friday night at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Malate, Manila, as RK Ilagan delivered another stellar performance to earn his second consecutive Best Player of the Game award.
The Bossing improved to 2-0 in Group B, proving their opening-game blowout of Rain or Shine was no fluke. After scoring 131 points in their conference debut, Blackwater showed another side of its game by relying on defense, discipline, and timely execution to overcome the Hotshots.
For head coach Pat Aquino, the victory was less about the final score and more about the mentality his team displayed throughout the contest.
“Sana ganito kami lagi. It’s a battle and I’m happy our guys stepped up like RK Ilagan. Some had a slow output but they didn’t give up and didn’t stop playing,” Aquino said after the game.
His message reflected the identity Blackwater is trying to build this season—one centered on effort, resilience, and collective responsibility.
RK Ilagan Continues His Breakout Conference
One of the biggest reasons behind Blackwater’s impressive start has been the consistent play of RK Ilagan.
The 29-year-old guard finished with 20 points, scoring in every quarter and providing the stability the Bossing needed whenever Magnolia threatened to seize momentum. His performance earned him his second straight Best Player of the Game citation, making him one of the earliest local standouts of the Governors’ Cup.
Ilagan has steadily developed into one of the league’s reliable backcourt players since entering the PBA. A product of San Sebastian College-Recoletos, he was selected 31st overall in the 2021 PBA Rookie Draft by Alaska, where he immediately showcased his shooting ability before eventually moving to Converge. Now with Blackwater, Ilagan has embraced a larger offensive role under Aquino and is flourishing with the increased responsibility.
Known for his perimeter shooting, composure, and ability to play both guard positions, Ilagan has become an important piece of Blackwater’s rotation. His confidence has grown significantly this conference, and it is beginning to show in his production on the floor.
After receiving another Best Player of the Game award, Ilagan credited his head coach for believing in him.

That trust has allowed Ilagan to play freely, making smart decisions while providing consistent scoring alongside the team’s import.
Barkley Delivers in Crunch Time
While Ilagan provided steady production from start to finish, import Kentrell Barkley once again proved why he remains Blackwater’s go-to player during crucial moments.
Barkley poured in 26 points, with 12 coming in the fourth quarter, helping the Bossing fend off Magnolia’s comeback attempt.
After leading by as many as 11 points earlier in the game, Blackwater watched the Hotshots slowly chip away at the deficit. Magnolia eventually threatened to steal the victory after import KJ Buffen caught fire offensively.
Instead of panicking, Blackwater responded with poise.
Barkley and Ilagan combined to spearhead a decisive 10-0 run in the closing minutes, turning a tight contest into a comfortable eight-point victory.
The late-game execution demonstrated a level of maturity that Blackwater lacked in previous conferences.

What made Blackwater’s latest victory even more impressive was the way it adapted its style of play.
In its conference opener, the Bossing overwhelmed Rain or Shine with explosive offense, scoring 131 points.

For Magnolia, import KJ Buffen finally found his rhythm after a relatively quiet PBA debut.
The athletic forward exploded for 32 points, nearly carrying the Hotshots back from an 11-point deficit.
His aggressive drives and outside shooting kept Magnolia within striking distance throughout the second half.
The Hotshots also received 11 points from Lastimosa and 10 from veteran Ian Sangalang, but the lack of consistent offensive support proved costly down the stretch.
Despite Buffen’s breakout performance, Magnolia suffered its second consecutive defeat, dropping to 0-2 in Group B.

Since taking over Blackwater, Pat Aquino has repeatedly emphasized culture, discipline, and accountability.
